The original Mini was designed by Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Corporation and launched in 1959, packing four seats and a transverse engine into a tiny footprint. BMW acquired the brand with the Rover Group in 1994 and kept it when Rover was sold, launching the modern MINI range in 2001.
