KTM began in 1934 as the repair workshop of Hans Trunkenpolz in Mattighofen, Upper Austria; the initials stood for Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, and motorcycle production followed in the early 1950s after businessman Ernst Kronreif joined the firm.
