Leyland Motors grew from the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, founded in 1896 in the town of Leyland in northwest England, and was renamed Leyland Motors in 1907. The firm built steam wagons, lorries and buses, later acquiring Triumph and Rover and merging in 1968 to form British Leyland, one of Britain's largest industrial groups. Its truck business survives today as Leyland Trucks.

Leyland is known for robust commercial vehicles and for a range of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines that powered trucks, buses and tractors over several decades. During the British Leyland period the company also produced agricultural tractors and, in Australia, the V8-powered Leyland P76 sedan, giving the name a surprisingly broad engineering footprint.
