Yanmar began in 1912 when Magokichi Yamaoka opened an engine workshop in Osaka; the Yanmar trademark followed in 1921. The company helped pioneer small, practical diesel engines in the 1930s, at a time when diesels were generally large stationary or marine units, and compact diesels have remained its core business ever since. Today Yanmar remains an independent Japanese engine specialist with operations worldwide.

Yanmar engines are everywhere afloat and ashore. Marine families include the GM, QM, YM and JH series, from the single-cylinder 1GM10 to the 4JH four-cylinders that serve as yacht auxiliaries and small-craft main engines.
