Pontiac was created in 1926 as a companion brand within General Motors, positioned between Chevrolet and Oldsmobile and named after the famous Odawa leader Chief Pontiac. It became known for youthful styling and accessible performance, especially after the launch of the GTO in 1964, which is widely credited with starting the muscle car era. The Firebird and Trans Am continued that image through the 1970s and 1980s. Pontiac styling, often with a distinctive performance flavour and bold detailing, made the brand instantly recognisable on American roads.

Pontiac also built practical family transport: the Trans Sport minivan appeared in 1990 with its distinctive futuristic styling, and the Montana minivan, sold from 1999, carried the brand's most practical work into the 2000s. General Motors retired the Pontiac brand in 2010 as part of its restructuring, so no new Pontiacs have been sold since, and the value of good technical information for the surviving cars has only grown.
