Mercury Repair Manuals

Mercury began in 1939, when engineer Carl Kiekhaefer bought a small engine company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and rebuilt a stock of defective outboard motors. The improved motors sold so well that Kiekhaefer built a business around them, adopting the Mercury name and the winged emblem of the Roman messenger god. The company grew into one of the world's leading outboard manufacturers, based in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and later became a division of Brunswick Corporation; Kiekhaefer Mercury was renamed Mercury Marine in 1972.

Mercury is best known for outboard motors and MerCruiser stern drives, with a performance reputation built through decades of racing and record runs. Its range spans small fishing motors up to large offshore V-6 and V-8 outboards. For a brief period in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mercury also produced snowmobiles; the first machines used the company's own 250 cc two-man chainsaw engine, and by 1971 the line included the aluminum-tunnel Rocket and Lightning models.

Mercury workshop manuals provide detailed factory procedures for engine disassembly and reassembly, fuel, cooling, and oiling systems, ignition and starting, lower unit and gearcase service, water pump replacement, and power trim and tilt. Each manual includes electrical and wiring diagrams, torque specifications, troubleshooting and diagnostics, and scheduled maintenance tables with capacities.

Boat owners, marina technicians, and restorers of classic Mercury outboards all benefit, and so do collectors who keep the rare Mercury snowmobiles of the late 1960s and early 1970s running.
