British Seagull began production in 1931 and became one of the longest-lived names in small outboards, with manufacture long associated with Poole in Dorset. Production finally ended in 1996 after some sixty-five years, by which time the basic design had changed remarkably little, which is precisely why the engines endure. Many engines outlived several boats.

The Seagull formula was a large, slow-revving single-cylinder two-stroke with generous torque, mixed its own oil in the petrol and could be repaired with basic tools. Model designations such as the Forty, 45, 55, 102, 110, 125 and 170 sit alongside names like the Featherweight, Century and Silver Century, and examples remain in regular use worldwide. The engines were deliberately over-engineered, trading power for dependability, and a thriving owners' community keeps knowledge alive.

Service manuals for these engines cover points and condenser ignition, the Amal carburettor, water pump impeller replacement, gearbox oil and propeller work, cylinder head removal and decarbonising, and cooling passage cleaning.
