Harry Ferguson was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1884 and worked as a mechanic before becoming the first person in Ireland to build and fly his own airplane in 1909. He turned his talents to agriculture, developing the Ferguson System of tractor and implements based on the three-point linkage, and formed a partnership to build the Ferguson-Brown tractor in the 1930s before the Ferguson TE20 appeared in 1946. That linkage allowed implements to be attached, lifted and controlled from the tractor seat, and it remains the basis of farm tractor design today.

Ferguson is best known for the TE20, the small grey tractor built at Coventry in partnership with the Standard Motor Company and exported by the tens of thousands.
