Ferdinando Innocenti made his fortune in steel tubing and scaffolding before turning to scooters at his Milan works beside the River Lambro, from which the Lambretta name derives. Launched in 1947, the Lambretta was conceived as affordable post-war transport and quickly became the great rival of the Vespa, with clean bodywork protecting the rider from road dirt.

Model series ran from the early A, B and C types through the LD and the much-loved Li range to the TV, SX and final GP. Italian production ended in the early 1970s, but licensed manufacture continued abroad, including Serveta in Spain and Scooters India Limited in Lucknow. In Britain the Lambretta became a symbol of mod culture, and survivors are prized by collectors worldwide.
