Motobecane was founded in 1923 in Pantin, near Paris, by two French industrialists, and its name combines moto with becane, French slang for bicycle. The firm built bicycles, motorcycles and other small vehicles, and in 1949 it launched the Mobylette, a simple, economical moped that became one of the most successful two-wheelers ever made and was sold in vast numbers all over the world.

The Mobylette made Motobecane a household name in France and far beyond, with millions of the little machines carrying generations of commuters, students and rural riders. Financial difficulties led Motobecane to bankruptcy in 1981, and the company was bought by Yamaha and reorganised in 1984 as MBK, which continues to build scooters and small motorcycles.
