Deere and Company began in 1837, when blacksmith John Deere opened a shop in Grand Detour, Illinois, and built a steel plow that handled prairie soil far better than iron designs. The company grew into one of the world's largest manufacturers of agricultural equipment, with headquarters in Moline, Illinois, and its green and yellow machines became familiar on farms everywhere. The company's steel plows and later tractors helped mechanize farming across North America and around the world.

John Deere snowmobiles were designed and built at the company's Horicon Works in Wisconsin from 1972 to 1984, following an intensive development program that tested the leading sleds of the day. The slogan Nothing Runs Like a Deere began with the snowmobile line in 1972, and Deere sleds served as the official snowmobiles of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. Deere also fielded a factory-supported cross-country racing program, and its Liquidator racer won the 1976 International 500, before the market downturn ended production in 1984.
