Kawasaki traces its origins to 1878, when founder Shozo Kawasaki established a shipyard in Tokyo; the business incorporated in 1896 and grew into one of Japan's major industrial groups, building ships, railway cars, aircraft, and engines. After the Second World War Kawasaki moved into consumer power products, and its motorcycles became one of the best-known parts of the company, joined later by Jet Ski personal watercraft and a broad line of utility and recreation vehicles. Kawasaki's snowmobile history centers on Sno-Jet, the fast-growing snowmobile maker based in Thetford Mines, Quebec. Kawasaki acquired Sno-Jet in the mid-1970s and continued to market its machines, keeping the Sno-Jet name in use until 1980. The takeover gave the Japanese company a foothold in the snowmobile market and connected Kawasaki to one of Canada's most successful sled brands of the 1960s.
