Vincenzo Lancia, a gifted Fiat test driver and engineer, founded his own company in Turin in 1906. From the Lambda of 1922, with its unitary body, narrow-angle V4 engine, and independent front suspension, the firm built a reputation for doing things first and doing them properly, a tradition carried on by his successors. The Aprilia added streamlined bodywork before the war.

The Aurelia of 1950 introduced the V6 engine widely credited as the first in series production, mounted with a rear transaxle for balance, while the Fulvia's narrow-angle V4 took Lancia to rally titles. Between them came the Flavia flat-four and the comfortable Gammas and Themas. The Stratos and the Delta Integrale, with its long run of World Rally Championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s, made the marque a motorsport legend.
