Audi traces its roots to 1909, when August Horch founded a new car company in Zwickau, Germany, after leaving the firm that bore his name. The four rings of the Audi badge appeared in 1932, when Audi merged with DKW, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union. After the Second World War the company re-emerged in Ingolstadt and began using the Audi name on new models from 1965.

Audi became famous in the 1980s for the quattro all-wheel-drive system that reshaped rallying and road-car performance, and for a succession of technically advanced engines including five-cylinder turbo units, the TDI diesel family introduced at the end of that decade, and later high-performance engines developed with the quattro GmbH division. The brand is also known for aerodynamic design, aluminium space-frame construction introduced on the A8, and its long-running A3, A4, A6 and A8 model families.
