AB Volvo was registered in Gothenburg in 1915 as a subsidiary of bearing maker SKF, and the first Volvo car rolled out in April 1927. From that beginning the company built a reputation for durability and safety, introducing the three-point seatbelt in 1959 and licensing the design freely to other makers. The company name derives from the Latin for I roll.

Volvo engine history is deep and varied. The pushrod B18 and B20 engines and the turbocharged redblock fours of the 1980s became legendary for longevity; the modular white-block five- and six-cylinder engines carried the brand through the 1990s and 2000s, joined by D5 diesels and V8s. Beyond cars, Volvo Group builds truck and bus diesels, Volvo Penta supplies marine and industrial engines, and Volvo construction equipment runs worldwide.
