Polaris began in Roseau, Minnesota, where Edgar Hetteen and his partners ran a small company called Hetteen Hoist and Derrick. Employees built the firm's first snowmobile prototype in 1954, and the first production Polaris sled, the Sno Traveler, came off the line in 1956. The machines proved so useful for winter travel and hunting that snowmobiles soon became the heart of the business.

Polaris grew into one of the largest snowmobile manufacturers in North America and later expanded into ATVs, side-by-sides, and motorcycles. Snowmobile engineering and much of the company's manufacturing have remained rooted in Roseau, Minnesota, and the model range has stretched from family trail sleds to deep-snow mountain machines such as the RMK, built on a strong heritage of cross-country and oval racing. Polaris snowmobiles have been sold in very large numbers across North America for decades, so a substantial fleet of older machines is still ridden and maintained today.

Polaris workshop manuals contain the factory repair procedures used by dealership technicians. They cover two-stroke and four-stroke engine work, fuel and oil injection systems, the continuously variable transmission and chaincase, suspension and skid frame service, ski alignment, steering, and brakes, plus complete electrical and wiring diagrams, torque specifications, diagnostics, and scheduled maintenance tables.
