Kymco, short for Kwang Yang Motor, was founded in 1963 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and began by making parts for other manufacturers, including Honda. The company assembled its first complete scooter in 1970 and began selling under its own KYMCO name in 1992, growing into Taiwan's largest scooter manufacturer and one of the biggest scooter producers in the world, with factories in several countries.

Kymco is often described as a specialist in scooters, and its range spans practical city models such as the Agility, Like and People, sporty machines such as the Super 8, and larger touring models including the Downtown and AK 550. The company has also built vehicles and engines for other major international brands, which says a great deal about the quality and scale of its manufacturing.
