Pontiac was created in 1926 as a companion brand within General Motors, positioned between Chevrolet and Oldsmobile and named after the famous Odawa leader Chief Pontiac. It became known for youthful styling and accessible performance, especially after the launch of the GTO in 1964, which is widely credited with starting the muscle car era. The Firebird and Trans Am continued that image through the 1970s and 1980s.
