František Janeček established Jawa in Prague in 1929, combining his name with that of German manufacturer Wanderer, whose motorcycle designs he licensed. The new firm quickly found success with light two-strokes, and after the Second World War its 250 and 350 twin models became everyday transport across Czechoslovakia and much of Central Europe.

Jawa machines earned a strong sporting reputation, above all in speedway and long-distance rallying. Licensed production spread the name worldwide, most notably in India, where Ideal Jawa of Mysore built Jawa motorcycles and later the closely related Yezdi models. The marque continues today, with production in the Czech Republic and a revival of the Jawa and Yezdi names in India. Thousands of these robust motorcycles were exported and many are still ridden regularly today.
