Johann Puch founded his bicycle works in Graz in the late nineteenth century, and the company was producing motorcycles by 1903 and automobiles soon after. In 1934 the firm merged into Steyr-Daimler-Puch, one of Central Europe's great engineering combines, under whose name Puch two-wheelers were sold for decades.

Puch earned particular fame for its two-stroke engineering, most notably the split-single engines with opposed pistons that powered successful roadsters such as the 250 SGS. In the 1970s the Maxi moped, also sold under the Sears badge in the United States, brought personal motorised transport to a generation and sold in the millions. Rights to the two-wheeled products passed to Piaggio in 1987, ending motorcycle production in Graz. The Maxi and its variants remained in production for years and remain among the most familiar classic mopeds in Europe today.
