AB Volvo was registered in Gothenburg in 1915 as a subsidiary of bearing maker SKF, and the first Volvo car rolled out in April 1927. From that beginning the company built a reputation for durability and safety, introducing the three-point seatbelt in 1959 and licensing the design freely to other makers. The company name derives from the Latin for I roll.

Volvo engine history is deep and varied. The pushrod B18 and B20 engines and the turbocharged redblock fours of the 1980s became legendary for longevity; the modular white-block five- and six-cylinder engines carried the brand through the 1990s and 2000s, joined by D5 diesels and V8s.
