Cagiva was founded in 1950 by Giovanni Castiglioni in Varese, Italy, originally as a maker of small metal components, and the name combines Castiglioni with the town of Varese. The family entered motorcycle manufacturing in 1978, and over the following decades Cagiva achieved race victories in motocross, enduro and Grand Prix competition while also controlling other famous Italian marques, including Ducati and MV Agusta at different periods.

Cagiva's own models spanned sporting two-strokes, enduro and adventure machines and larger street bikes, and they were respected for strong engineering and a distinctly Italian character. The company gradually shifted its focus to its other brands over the years, and production of new Cagiva-badged models wound down in the 2000s, leaving the marque largely dormant but still genuinely admired by enthusiasts and off-road riders.
