Malaguti was founded in 1930 by Antonino Malaguti in San Lazzaro di Savena, near Bologna in Italy, and produced bicycles through its first decades. The company entered the motorcycle market in 1958 and gradually specialised in light, small-capacity machines, building a name with mopeds and scooters that suited young riders, city commuters and enthusiasts who valued agility and character.

Over the following decades Malaguti offered a wide range of two-wheelers, from sporty 50 cc scooters and mopeds to larger maxi-scooters, and its models were popular across Italy and much of Europe. The company struggled in the difficult market conditions of the late 2000s and closed its operations in 2011, and the brand name was later acquired by the Austrian KSR Group in 2018, although no new Malaguti scooters are in production today.
