Hino Motors traces its origins to Tokyo Gas Industry's vehicle operations and was established as an independent company in 1942. After the war the company concentrated on trucks and buses, and in 1967 it entered a close alliance with Toyota that made it part of the Toyota Group. Today Hino is Japan's leading maker of medium and heavy-duty trucks, with products ranging from the light-duty Dutro to the 500 and 700 Series used in long-haul and construction work.

The brand is known for robust, fuel-efficient diesel engines and long service life, and it was an early adopter of diesel-electric hybrid technology in commercial vehicles with hybrid versions of the Dutro. Hino trucks earned a strong reputation in Australia, Southeast Asia and North America, where models such as the 195, 268 and 338 are common in regional delivery and vocational fleets.
