The first Ski-Doo was launched in 1959 by Joseph-Armand Bombardier in Valcourt, Quebec. The name came from a typographical error in a company brochure that changed Ski-Dog to Ski-Doo, and Bombardier decided the mistake was worth keeping. The brand has pioneered chassis design, including the REV platform introduced in 2003, and its Rotax two-stroke and four-stroke engines have long powered the line. Ski-Doo is today built by BRP, the company spun off from Bombardier in 2003. Ski-Doo machines were also part of the first verified overland expedition to reach the North Pole, in 1968.
