Vittorio Minarelli began building engines in Bologna in 1951, and the company that bears his name became one of the most influential suppliers in European light motorcycling. From the 1960s onwards Motori Minarelli produced horizontal and vertical two-stroke engines that were fitted to mopeds and scooters sold under a remarkable number of different brand names across the continent.

The horizontal engines powered generations of mopeds, while the vertical AM6 unit became the standard fitment for 50cc sport bikes such as the Aprilia RS50. Later liquid-cooled vertical engines equipped many of the quickest 50cc scooters of their era. Minarelli eventually became part of Yamaha, and its plant at Lugo in northern Italy served as an important production site for the group. Engine production at Lugo continued under Yamaha ownership.
