Alpine was established in 1955 in Dieppe, France, by Jean Redele, a Renault dealer and enthusiastic rally driver who began building lightweight competition cars around Renault mechanicals. The company grew from small premises into a respected manufacturer with a close engineering relationship with Renault, which took control of the marque in the early 1970s while production remained in Dieppe.

Alpine is celebrated for its glass-fibre bodies, low weight and superb handling rather than sheer power. The A110 Berlinette of the 1960s and 1970s became one of the great rally cars of its era and turned Alpine into an international name. Later models included the four-cylinder A110 evolution, the larger A310, and the V6-powered GTA and A610 of the 1980s and 1990s. After a long pause, the name was revived in 2017 with a new mid-engined A110 that returned to the original lightweight formula.
