MAN's history reaches back to the St. Antony ironworks of 1758, which grew into the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg. The company's Augsburg works helped Rudolf Diesel build the first practical diesel engine in 1897, and MAN applied diesel power to trucks and buses from the early twentieth century. Since 2011 MAN has been part of Volkswagen's commercial vehicle group, now organised as Traton.

MAN trucks are known for efficient diesel engineering, cab comfort and durability. The TG range, launched with the TGA in 2000 and developed through the TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL models, covers long-haul, heavy and distribution duty, while MAN city buses and coaches run on routes across Europe. Earlier F90 and F2000 ranges still work in large numbers across Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

MAN workshop manuals provide engine repair and overhaul procedures from the light D08 to the larger D20 and D26 diesels, ZF and MAN gearboxes, clutches and drivelines, air brakes with electronic controls, axles and suspension, and complete wiring diagrams.
